Teepees

Traditionally, teepees were built with wooden poles and covered with buffalo hides sewn together.

Nowadays, Habitation Wigwam uses canvas. Since 2008, we've been striving to improve our products, and we're proud to say with certainty that the canvas we use today is of the highest quality on the market.

A little teepee history

Aboriginal people create powerful symbolic associations between the teepee and the spiritual world. The inner floor of the teepee is open, representing Mother Earth. The canvas represents the sky and the connection with the Creator. The poles link the earth to the sky and symbolise the paths by which prayers are made to the heavens (The Canadian Encyclopedia). For greater comfort, the floor can be covered with spruce and buffalo hides. This is how the natives traditionally made their beds in the past, and surprisingly, it's very comfortable and it smells great!

Nowadays, teepees are used by most of America's indigenous peoples. It represents an emblem of resistance, healing and cultural reappropriation. For aboriginal brothers and sisters, the teepee gives hope for better days ahead. We help them as best we can to reclaim their culture and promote it for the healing of their people.

We are grateful to work with them because we believe they can teach us to live more in touch with ourselves and with nature, which is invaluable.

Whatever your background, we're here to help you get a teepee of the highest quality.

Teepee poles

We can help you source the poles you need to set up your teepee. For the price of the poles, you must contact us, because we must see this, case by case, depending on your region.

Creating your own poles is possible. This is not a very difficult task, but it requires energy. However, spending energy on a job well done brings great satisfaction. By spanking your own poles, you will save a good amount of money on their prices, but also on transport.

If you have the opportunity, we encourage you to do them.

Prospector tents

Functionality and a little history

In every season, and particularly in Winter, prospector tent camping/glamping has historical, traditional and practical roots. This activity would not be possible today without the knowledge of Winter survival passed down and improved by Aboriginal peoples from generation to generation. Moreover, it contributed to the way of life of mining and forestry prospectors throughout North America and beyond.

Traditionally set up in forests or near wooded areas, the prospector's tent is shaped like a small house high enough to stand upright. The canvas is mounted on a structure made from tree trunks. However, in urban areas, timber is used. For more modern facilities, campers use light metal structures, such as aluminum, which is easy to use and transport.

Habitation Wigwam's prospector tent is made from high-quality canvas. There is an opening in one of the front wall created for an elbow-shaped chimney pipe, making it possible to install a wood-burning stove for cold, wet weather.
